Since early 2007, the Club of Madrid, in collaboration with FRIDE, has undertaken a series of dialogue missions to strengthen democracy and promote freedom of association in North Africa and the Middle East.
Here, the Imam Alsadig al-Mahdi, the former Prime Minister of Sudan, outlines the objectives of the project, describes his experience in leading dialogues in Bahrain, Jordan and Morocco during the first year of this project and discusses why freedom of association is a vital component of democratic reform.
