The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) today condemned the repressive escalation carried out by Sudanese authorities on Friday June 13 during their attack on the peaceful protest staged by the National Umma Party (NUP) jointly with the opposition forces and activists. The protest was to demand the release of political prisoners; head of NUP “Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi” and Sudanese Congress Party’s head “Ibrahim Al-Sheikh” top them. ANHRI also denounced the arrest of a large number of activists and party members, including Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi’s five daughters.
Security forces attacked the peaceful rally set at al-Rabta square in Khartoum’s Shambat neighbourhood with tear gas. The police arrested a number of participants, most prominently Dr. Mariam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, Zainab Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, Tahra Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, Om-Salma Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi, Dr. Abdel-Rahman Al-GHali, Al-Sadiq Othman, Hamed Mortada Kamal, Abdel-Rahman Khalifa Sherif along with other participants of the protest.
It is worth mentioning that Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi was detained after he had strongly criticized the Sudanese authorities and Rapid Support Forces (RSF); which is the same reason behind the detention of Sudanese Congress Party’s head “Ibrahim Al-Sheikh”.
“The Sudanese authorities cut off all means of democratic dialogue and stifle all hopes of creating a free and dignified life in the country on account of their insistence on the repressive policy recently adopted. Such a matter requires human rights collaboration among all the organizations concerned with human rights and freedoms in an attempt to halt the massacres of freedoms carried out by the Sudanese authorities”, ANHRI said.
