Club de Madrid Members Meidani and Al Mahdi meets Moldovan and Tunisian delegations

 

This meeting was organized by the Club de Madrid in the framework of the Leaders Engaged in New Democracies (LEND) Network initiative is led by the Community of Democracies and LEND Network co-chairs Estonia and the United States. They discussed their concerns especially in view to the next elections in both countries with Elmar Brok, Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Štefan Füle, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy.

 

The purpose of the gathering, was to allow the Tunisian and Moldovan participants of the online, virtual LEND platform to have Face-to-Face to exchanges with Club de Madrid Members and the project’s advisors. The participants engaged in practical discussions on three key themes for the consolidation of Tunisian and Moldovan democratic systems:

  • Pre-electoral challenges and post-electoral realities
  • The role of the new governments and the role of civil society
  • Leveraging the European Neighborhood Policy in domestic policy debate to upgrade domestic laws to international standards

 

Background information

 

The LEND initiative leverages expertise from the Club de Madrid and 21st century technologies to connect leaders who have successfully navigated the challenges of democratization with leaders in emerging democracies. It will augment face-to-face meetings with ongoing peer-to-peer exchanges via a sophisticated, secure virtual platform.

 

 Club de Madrid Members Rexhep Meidani, President of the Republic of Albania (1997-2002) and Sadig al-Mahdi, Prime Minister of Sudan (1966-1967, 1986-1989) led in Brussels a fruitful LEND project meeting with delegations of political and social leaders from Tunisia and Moldova.
